WELCOME

Welcome to the Central Virginia Show Jumping Association (CVSJA) website.  We are an organization committed to promoting the sport of show jumping in Central Virginia.  As an associate member of the Virginia Horse Shows Association we are proud to produce an annual show jumping series that helps further the popularity of show jumping in Virginia.  The CVSJA has consistently been voted as one of VHSA's top 10 shows!!

Since 2002, our show venue has been the ever-popular Deep Run Show Grounds.  With the covered grand stand seating and excellent ring footing, Deep Run is popular with spectators and exhibitors alike.

During our eighteen-year history we have collected a loyal following that includes participants from as far as Roanoke, VA.  We also have folks from Lexington, Charlottesville, VA Beach, and of course the greater Richmond area.  Each season individuals new to the excitement of show jumping join our ranks.  Folks from all levels--novice to amateur to the professionals--can come and really get a feel for show jumping in a friendly, supportive setting. It's a great show for those wanting to try their skills in the jumpers and for those experienced folks wanting to test their skills for the A shows.

We look forward to having you join us!!

Current News --updated on January 15, 2012
  • Really hard to believe it's 2012 already and time for me to get my act together and start updating the website after a brief hiatus. If you haven't had a chance to do so, don't forget to get an advertiser for our prize list. The more advertisers we have the more likely it is that we can keep our fees to you reasonable. Click HERE for the advertiser-agreement page. So for those of you that have been eagerly awaiting website updates...here you go:
  • Congratulations to all the end-of-season awards winners for the 2011 show season. Check HERE to see who won what. If you were unable to make it to the awards dinner we were sorry to miss you. The dinner was great fun and delicious (Thank you Lona & Gil Crittendon, and their assistants, you did a great job yet again! We hope to keep this a tradition for quite some time!). If you were an awards winner that couldn't attend, we'll keep your award until you can pick it up next season.
  • New business for 2012: Unfortunately we need to raise entry fees, etc for 2012 (see Fees, etc. to the right for 2012 prices). It's been several years since we had to do this and while we'd still love to be able to offer the same great show experience for the same great price, we just can no longer manage to do so. This is mainly due to two causes: decreased numbers of volunteers, particularly for setting the jumps the day before the show, and major fee increases per show that Deep Run is now charging us; this translates into increased charges for you. We've tried to still keep the CVSJA fee increases to a minimum but we will be monitoring this to see if any additional increases need to be made so this is subject to change.
  • New rule regarding warm-up rounds: Each horse will be allowed one warm up round per show. So let's say you're riding Roscoe and he's new to show jumping and you want to do a warm-up for the C/A before your judged ride...no problem you can do that warm-up round. But if you were thinking you also wanted to try a schooling division at that same show, but were wondering if you or your trainer could do a warm up round on Roscoe in the schooling division too...the answer is "no," Roscoe gets one warm up round per show (though you or your trainer are still welcome to ride him judged in the schooling).. I'm sure there will be questions about this rule at the first few shows, so more information will be forthcoming on this as needed. We're doing this to provide an opportunity for warm-ups in all the divisions without increasing the length of the show day too much. As with any change, we'll see how it goes and if works for the majority of folks we'll keep it, if not, we'll meet and make adjustments as needed. And remember, we're happy to hear your feedback but that doesn't always mean we can accommodate it. We try, but ultimately we have to make sure the show day provides what works best for most of the exhibiters.
  • As the Mini-Prix show date approaches stay tuned for updates on how that show day will run and fees for the Mini-Prix.
  • Lastly, this is the only page I've updated so information on all other pages will be old news : ).
  • Oh...HAPPY NEW YEAR! Look forward to seeing you all in the Spring (which cannot get here soon enough in my opinion...though I'm sure all those that migrate to Florida don't necessarily feel the same, but we still which them all much luck and fun during their southern exposure time!!).
  • As always...Volunteers Needed! As many of you are aware the CVSJA has grown by leaps and bounds over the past few years.  We are now in our fifteenth year and the show we were a decade ago is very different from the show we’ve become.  One feature that has remained the same, though, is our commitment to hosting quality, fun, competitive shows with an emphasis on providing competitive opportunities in a schooling-show setting that allows for new and experienced exhibiters to thrive.

What many of you may not realize, though, is that the show association and the majority of the activities related to each show day are provided by volunteers.  Volunteers show up the Saturday before show days to help set the courses, which is no small commitment of effort and time, especially since there are rarely enough volunteers that show up and thus the course settings are usually left to the same individuals each time.  These same volunteers also usually work the day of each show to ensure that the show day runs smoothly and is an enjoyable competitive experience for exhibiters. Some of our volunteers actually work as gatekeepers or in the secretarial stand and show on the same day or work the day of the show and then have hours of show statistics and financial reconciliation to deal with the following day.

The show association is extremely excited to see the increased growth and popularity of our shows, but with these ever-increasing numbers and with the addition of a second ring, we need additional volunteers in order to continue to provide quality schooling show experiences.  Here is a list of areas in which volunteer help would be much appreciated:

    • Secretarial stand on show day—involves helping exhibiters register for classes and accepting payments for the show day as well as reconciling exhibiter registration with judges’ cards.
    • Announcing—involves announcing exhibiters’ numbers, names, horse names and other information needed to keep exhibiters informed throughout the day.
    • Gatekeeper—involves maintaining the in-gate and tracking exhibiters’ order-of-go as well as trying to keep the rings from having too much “down time.”
    • Concession related volunteers:
      • Prepare food, such as brownies, cookies, salads, ahead of the show day to be sold in the concession stand.
      • Work in the concession stand helping to collect money and/or grill food.
      • Help organize sign-ups for volunteers willing to bring food and/or work in the concession stand.
    • Helpers-at-large—would involve checking in with the secretarial and/or other CVSJA staff to be an extra set of hands, as needed, on the day of the show.  For example, if a regular volunteer is sick or cannot help out that day, a helper-at-large could step in and assist as needed; or if one of the gatekeepers is also showing that day, the helper-at-large could step in and help work the gate while the “regular” gatekeeper went to prepare themselves and their horse for their classes.

There are likely other areas in which any help would be appreciated.  If you are interested in learning more about how you can volunteer and help us continue to provide such excellent shows, please see one of the current volunteers in the secretarial stand or fill out a “CVSJA Volunteerism: Interested in Learning More” form found by clicking here.  You can email or fax this form to the CVSJA or bring it with you to the next show.  Filling out this form will not commit you to helping.  Remember, adult and junior volunteers are welcome!
